Of all the flowers, the rose really does hold the title of ‘Queen of all the Flowers’. It is rich in history dating back to its early place in Greek mythology. One of the first stories of delight tells of Chloris, Greek Goddess of Flowers, who one day found a sad and weak nymph. Wishing to restore her to health asked The Graces for help. They granted the nymph the gifts of joy, brightness, and charm.
Chloris wanted to do more for the dying nymph so appealed to the other gods and she was given nectar, beauty by Aphrodite, and Zephyr, the west wind, blew away the clouds so the sun could shine upon her. Chloris called this beautiful bloom - Rose.
In the beginning it was believed that all roses were white, and one of the many stories of how roses became coloured comes from Greek mythology, in which the god Jupiter saw Venus bathing. Embarrassed to be seen so exposed, she blushed and all the white roses surrounding her turned red in sympathy.
In the language of flowers, the white rose is for pure love.
