This beautifully shaped rose was created to resemble the Pilgrim variety bred by British breeder David Austin in 1991. The name is in honor of the pilgrims as found in the works of Geoffrey Chaucer "The Canterbury Tales", written in the XIV century and published in the early era of printing.
This beautiful queen of the flowers is rich in history and is closely associated with Adonis, the lover of Aphrodite.
Legend has it that one day, Adonis was gored by a wild boar during a hunting trip and died in Aphrodite’s arms. As she wept, the first red roses were said to have sprung up from his blood as it soaked into the earth, staining the nearby white roses a deep crimson. Perhaps this explains why red roses came to be inextricably linked to romantic love, adorning millions of Valentine’s Day cards every year. To this I think, the idea that love transcends death and lives on beyond the lovers’ own short lives.
In the language of flowers, the red rose is associated with deep love.
