The generic name is a Latin word similar to the Greek word Leirion, meaning the Madonna.  In the writings of the Venerable Bede, he decided that the lily should be the flower to represent the Resurrection of the Virgin. The white petals signified her body, and the yellow anther that of her soul. Such a beautiful story.

In the language of flowers, the white Lily is for purity, light and all that is whole & honest.
