Aka Antirrhinum
The name is derived from the Greek words 'anti' which means like and 'rhin' meaning nose or snout, from the mask-like appearance of the flowers. As a child I used to love pinching the flowers between my fingers, to watch the dragon’s mouth open and snap shut.
D H Lawrence wrote:
'I like to see', said she
'The snap-dragon put out his tongue at me'.
In the language of flowers, snapdragons are said to represent both deception (perhaps tied to the notion of concealment) and graciousness.
