The history is fascinating and its arrival in our gardens today is the result of theft and greed! When many generations ago it was discovered that red dye was produced by the Cochineal Beetles, someone along the way decided that if these Beetles could be smuggled out out of Mexico, there was a profit to be made.
However, those doing the stealing didn’t realise the Beetles needed Agave to eat and not Dahlia Tubers. The Beetles were found dead on arrival, and Napoleon suggested the tubers be given to Josephine. The rest is history.
In the language of flowers, they represent ‘forever yours’ and my gratitude exceeds your care.
This is a beautiful bloom with warm milky white petals interspersed with shades tones and tinted of the softest cochineal pink.
