It was the Swedish naturalist and Linnaeus Apostle, Peter Osbeck, who gave the white Phalaenopsis the name moth orchid. Apparently during a stopover in Java on an expedition to China, he mistook a large cluster of Phalaenopsis orchids to be that of a flurry of white moths. It wasn’t until he got closer, that he realised what they were. The local Javanese called them ‘Daughter of the Air’.
In the language of flowers, they represent elegance and rare beauty.
