Did you know that according to Greek Mythology, the hyacinths got their name from a handsome young man named Hyakinthos, who was slain by the god of the west wind, Zephyr? It is written that Zephyr fought for the attention of the young man and was jealous that his guide Apollo, gave the young man more attention.
When Zephyr recognized that he was no longer the preferred student, he directed a strong wind his way. The disc’s that Hyakinthos was throwing flew back and struck him, killing immediately on impact. Apollo was so heartbroken witnessing such tragedy that he planted a flower where the young boy died.
Some of the early botanists believed that the name hyacinth was derived from the word jacinth, which means blue gemstone and is possibly a reference to the blue cultivar of the most common grown plant.
